Kamran Ghaedi
Distinguished Professor of Cell & Molecular Biology
SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND
With a Master of Science in Clinical Biochemistry from the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (1992) and first ranked score among graduates of that university, I successfully passed the national qualification exam for students deployed abroad in the field of Genetics which was held by the Ministry of Science Research and Technology of Iran and I was nominated as the first ranked candidate in my country. Furthermore, I succeeded to win the Japanese government (Monbukaga) scholarship and thereby acquired a Doctor of Science (DSc. equivalent to the Ph.D.) degree in Biology from Kyushu University (1999). My supervisor was Prof. Yukio Fujiki who achieved acclaim as a worldwide pioneer in the field of peroxisome biology. Following my graduate training in Fujiki’s laboratory, I continued in Fujiki’s lab as a senior postdoctoral researcher for 6 years and was awarded fellowships from the Japan Society for Promotion of Science, Japan Science and Technology Corporation.
This training prepared me as a qualified advanced degree scientist with extensive experience in cellular and molecular biology. This strong academic background laid the foundation for my current positions as professor of Biology at the University of Isfahan and former position as the head of the Genetics research group at the Royan Institute for Animal Biotechnology. My work there involves investigations on the roles of proteins FNDC5 and PPARgamma in proliferation and differentiation of embryonic stem cells, the functions of peroxisomes in cells and biogenesis disorders, and factors that relieve neurodegenerative diseases, among other topics. My background of expertise and experience has enabled me to contribute significantly to other fields of molecular biology, and I fully expect to continue being a highly productive research scientist.
